New job description: Miracle worker ...

During the course of this week, my work load increased from 3 projects to 5, all with a deadline of ASAP. Much credit goes to my manager who is great at delegating, my blood pressure is thankful.

"Why didn't you say 'no'?", you may ask ... well, my manager has a knack for describing my projects in very simple terms, making it look like they are all very easy to do. Oh, he volunteered me for one of the projects too. No prior discussion, just an e-mail to another manager in the US mentioning '~g~ can do this'. I only found out because I was CC'ed the e-mail ... *groan*.

Sometimes I just wish I has a simpler job ... you know the kind where all you do is follow a set of instructions. As a programmer, one usually has to conjure up something out of nothing ... sounds very much like a miracle eh?

Why ...

Why is it that when I look at other people's photos I go 'Wow' but when I look at my own I go 'Huh?' ...

[Which reminds me, I need to start taking pictures again ... finger a little itchy ...]

Another day ...

Another day has gone by and so does another birthday. When will it end? [errr ... when you kick the bucket, stoopid : ) ]

It has been a great day with many nice e-mails, SMSes and calls wishing me a happy birthday. I was on cloud 9 [how did that phrase come about I wonder?], so much so that I stopped at a T junction and was just about to turn left ... then [my brain kicked into gear and] I suddenly noticed the red traffic light in front of me. [Helloooo ... you almost ran through a red light!!!]

My sister sent me an e-mail during the day and mentioned it was "mum's special day too" which was quite profound. Here I was thinking that I was the 'star' of today yet when you think about it, it was on this very same day that my mum endured the pain of childbirth and also experienced utter joy [I hope] when I popped into the world. This was also her special day.

[So next time it is your birthday, don't forget to show your appreciation to your mum too!]

Foreign Words

Foreign Words, originally uploaded by ~g~.

My brother passed this on to me a while ago. Don't know where he got it but I've kept it safe in case I needed it =). This is a book of phrases really, from small talk "Where to you come from?", to swearing "sh*t", to what they call 'lover's language' such as "I'm crazy about you" or even 'break up' terms such as "I don't love you anymore". I bet you won't find these terms in travel books or dictionaries!

So here is a short Japanese lesson:

Haven't seen you around for a while. [Hisashiburi-dane]

Really? [Honto?]

I'm hungry. [Onaka-ga suita]

I like it alot. [Daisuki]

Stupid. [Baka]

Sh*t. [Kuso]

I'll always think of you. [Female would say:Itsumo anata-o ommotteru-wa
Male would say:Itsumo kimi-o ommotteru-yo]

My fascination with the japanese probably began when I was really young via their cartoons or ultraman shows. Then it was their cars, music, food, culture, cameras etc. My parents would say, "Things made in Japan are good quality", I guess that phrase stuck. I studied Japanese in my uni days, it was hard work with 6 hours of tutorials every week. I even visited a club where you would converse with japanese students or other students learning japanese. Alas I've forgotten most of what I've learn't since I haven't had much opportunity to practice.

Let's hope I say the right words to the right people. With my luck I'd probably unintentionally say something unkind about one's mother to a member of the yakuza (when all I wanted to ask was directions to the nearest toilet) and end up running for my life through the streets of Tokyo ...

Money money money ...

The last day of October also means the last day for submitting your tax return, otherwise you may have to pay a fine. If you've been caught unawares, no need to panic. Getting your tax return done with a tax agent provides you with an extension of a few months (can't remember how many exactly ...).

Just submitted my tax return online and I'm getting a refund ... YES!!! Probably took me 1 hour to go through it all. I used to get a tax agent to do my taxes however one year I received $130 back in tax and the agent's fees were $120 so received a grand total of $10 back. Ever since then, I've been doing my own tax returns.

More about diamonds! This was a comment I left on a fellow blogger's page regarding diamonds ...

Go to Linneys at Rokeby Road, Subiaco. When looking through their 2007 collection catalogue, my jaw dropped. Melissa George is absolutely gorgeous and I saw a ring for $18,000.00! [Yes, there are that many zeros at the end!]. Guys ... if any girl tries to persuade you to buy diamonds from Subi, RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!

Come to think of it, I do remember walking by Subiaco on a Thursday night a few years ago and popped into a very nice looking jeweler. Can't remember whether it was Linneys or not but I do remember that it was pricey and way beyond my budget ...

Life is a beach ...

I was at Swanbourne beach on Sunday [yes, that is a nudist beach ... no, I wasn't nude. Well, unofficially it is a nudist beach. You have to walk northwards about 300m or so to the 'clothes optional' area]. Initially I had wanted to stop at Cottesloe beach instead but the car parks were full, alcohol starved men & women were enjoying their 'Sunday session' at their favourite watering holes.

With an hour or two to kill before dinner, I trudged along the sandy shores with camera in hand. I've always wanted to take shots of the beach. It was a warm day but the sea breeze made it quite pleasant. It wasn't crowded at this end of the beach; there were couples having a leisurely walk; families playing in the water; 3 guys with their body boards wrestling with the waves.

I walked to the shoreline, far enough where the water would flow below my knees and stood there while peering into the Indian ocean. With the expanse of water and sky before me, I never fail to ask this question "What's the meaning of life?" [I always ask myself this question at the beach...]

Beach-3

I didn't get a chance to dwell on my question. A little pug [for those who don't know, that's a particular dog breed] came running by with a young boy who was probably 4 or 5 years old with [I gather] his sister who is probably 2 years older. It was fun watching the dog dance with the waves at it came crashing down. The dog would chase the waves as it retreated then run when the waves returned. The kids were yelling 'Help! Help Molly!' in a bid to get the dog to jump into the water. The dog never went it really deep, always making sure the water reached only chest height. Even though the beach had signs that dogs weren't allowed, I enjoyed seeing the little pug run around.

Then the answer to my question came. All to often we psycho analyse everything. The 'what ifs', 'I should haves', 'why did I do that' cloud our minds with the past or burdens us with the future. Our heads filled with 'things to-do', 'people to meet', 'places to be'. Preoccupied with the past which we cannot change or the future that hasn't happened yet, we let the present just drift by. 'Now' only comes once.

So there I stood, for an hour or so soaking up the glorious sunshine. For an hour, nothing else mattered except the air in my lungs, the sand under my feet, the water swirling around me and the God above me.

Beach-1

Hmmm ... wonder why ...

Don't know why exactly but recently I've been feeling rather tired at the end of the day. By 6pm I mind shuts down, turns to mush and I start talking gibberish [some might say that's what I do all the time anyway]. Oh ... and no, I'm not pregnant. I checked :)

Lefty ...

To some who may have noticed, I'm left handed. Which means, my watch is on my right hand. I write, eat and play sports with my left hand. So when a friend noticed that I was a 'lefty', he said that it 'explains why I'm creative'. I've heard the same story so I decided to look it up on Wikipedia. It has something to do with 'lefties' using the right side of their brain more which is [quote from Wikipedia] "found in some circumstances to be associated with genius and is correlated with artistic and visual skill."

Sounds great doesn't it? However the article also mentions that it has also been linked to [another quote from Wikipedia] "auto-immune disorders, learning disorders, dyslexia, and stuttering, as well as increased spatial ability."

So I'm either brilliant or dyslexic. Hhmmmm ... which one ... I know!

I'm brilliantly dyslexic.

What would it be like ...

My current 'guilty pleasure' is Grey's Anatomy and most recently What about Brian.

A common thread running through these two shows [and many many other shows] is forbidden love. I often wonder what it would be like to be in a similar situation ... where you're irresistibly attracted to your colleague or attracted to your girlfriend's friend. Sounds very wrong doesn't it?

In my previous office building, a few other departments were on the lower floors and for a short period a beautiful surveyor joined the company. Her surname revealed that she is italian, brown hair tied back in a pony tail, very well spoken and with a great smile. Another colleague mentioned that she was 'very easy on the eyes' and that she was. A classic beatuy. Sadly she left not long after she joined. Our technical department has since moved to a smaller building and only houses us techies. Not to worry, my female colleagues are all married and in their early 40s so no risk of 'forbidden love' at this joint.

[Not to worry ... sometimes I wonder what would it be like to be a girl ... doesn't mean I'd actually become one!!! ... yes, I'm starting to agree ... I think too much.]

Sooo hardworking ...

8 hours a day, originally uploaded by ~g~.

If the number of screens on your desk is directly proportionate to how hard one works, then I'm probably the hardest working guy in my office. Either that or I have 3 computers to surf the web, MSN or blog with ... hahahaha. Naahhhh ... I can't actually MSN or blog at work, our network blocks those sites. Quite rightly so, otherwise no work would get done.

So what do you think of my desk?

Thinking ...

Some of my friends tell me that I'm a 'thinker'. One even told me "don't think so much ...". During a recent conversation with a friend over lunch, the question was asked "When do you think? Do you sit down and think of things?". My answer was "No". You see, I don't 'sit down and think of things'. In fact, I don't think I'll be able to sit and 'just think' for more than 5 minutes. Things just come to mind. Now some may think that being considered a 'thinker' would mean that I'm rather smart or something. Well, in my case, that isn't necessarily true. Case in point, below was a train of thought I had a while ago during work ....

Me: I want to start sewing again ...

Me: You're sooooo gayyyyyy ...

Me: I want to learn how to play the guitar. But I don't want to develop callouses on my fingers ...

Me: You're such a girl !!!

Me: ......

Me: I'm a lesbian ?!?!?!?

So what do you think? Do you think I think too much? [hahahahaa :P]

A day of pluses and minuses ...

Having spent my first full day in Perth after about six weeks in the US, today was a day of pluses and minuses.

[+] Being able to wake up in my own bed.

[+] Being able to drink Milo. [This does not exist in the US.]

[+] Having breakfast with family.

[+] Driving on the left side of the road again. [In the US, they drive on the right side, took some time to get used to it.]

[-] Car's battery is dead.

[+] Attending church and listening to a great message by brother Sudha Niles.

[+] Catching up with my dear friends [Major plus, received a key ring too. Thanks!]

[-] Leaving my dark blue hooded jacket in church. [Major bummer, quite annoyed with myself. Hopefully one of our excellent ushers picked it up.]

[+] Lunch at Spencer Village. [Was craving for good chinese food. Chinese food was pretty bad in Louisiana.]

[-] Finding out there is a gas fault at home and we'll need to call the plumber. This also means that we can't cook, the gas heater doesn't work and worse of all, no hot water. Will cost a bomb to fix of course. Found out that a plumber costs $104 for a call out fee which includes the first 15 minutes. Then $25 for every 15 minutes after that! Man! Forget being a doctor! I should have been a plumber![Aiii yaaaiiii yaaaiiii ... why does this have to happen in the middle of winter!]

[+] Went out for dinner with family. Unofficially this was my Birthday dinner which I didn't have because I was in the US. [Having a Birthday by yourself is no fun I tell you. Was planning on going to a steak house and just do a mini celebration by myself but I ended up not going because the thought of eating alone in a restaurant didn't appeal very much. Friends and family SMSed which was very nice.]

[-] Ironing my work clothes for tomorrow. [I soooo need a few days off to just get my bearings back together.]

~Sigh~ ... after a day of ups and downs like today, I'm just glad that there are a few more pluses than minuses. Thanks to the big guy up in the sky. Now off to bed ... my own bed ...

My childhood/highschool days ... 7 facts ...

I was tagged by both Nikki and LizW. Never having been tagged before and adhering to the unwritten law of bloggers that you must honour a tag, here are my 7 facts.

[I must mention beforehand that all these 7 facts are indeed true and did happen in my childhood / highschool years. I might have overshared but hopefully this won't haunt me in later life.]

1. When I was 3 or 4, my sister dressed me up in a frilly dress. There is photographic proof [one that no one will ever be able to find].

2. In kindergarten, I came 3rd in my class. That was the peak of my academic career, after that I never came close to 3rd. Well ... maybe 3rd last. The worse thing is that by doing so I gave my parents false hope. I wasn't the little genius they thought I was. [Nothing like disappointing your parents early on, I'd say].

3. Before my teen years I had the voice of a girl. How do I know this? Because every time someone called over the phone for my parents, they would either ask "are you their daughter?" or they would mention to my parents that they left a message with "your daughter" which was in fact me. So when I mentioned this to my parents, they would reply "Next time you see them, just drop your pants and show them lahh ..." [see ... now you know why I'm psycho].

4. When we were about 10 or so, me and my brother would 'go drowning'. You all commonly know it as 'swimming' but when me and my brother get to the pool, we would fight [as we always do] and try to push each other under the water. The pool was at a golf club so the life guard would always be telling us to stop.[During our younger years, my brother and I would be constantly fighting and I mean the physical sort. We weren't going to let some water and an old life guard stop us.]

5. At one point in my life [probably was 10-12 years old], I thought I'd probably end up becoming a priest or a doctor. A priest because I thought I was such a 'good boy'. A doctor because my parents would love that and I thought I was smart enough. Boy was I deluded then. [Now that I look back, I would have flunked out of medical school and would have been excummunicated from church because I was (am?) the 'devil incarnate!']

6. Before I knew how the 'birds & bees' really worked, I thought girls got pregnant by the exchange of saliva. Boy I was soooooo innocent [misguided and psycho] then. You see in M'sia, the various movies and tv shows are censored. So what would normally be shown is a couple kissing then 'lo and behold, a baby is made! So during my highschool days, I would be very selective of the girls who wanted to share my drink. Can only share with the pretty ones you see?!?!?!?!? [So if I've shared a drink with you recently, you're indeed privileged! Uummmm ... you aren't pregnant are you?]

7. During highschool, my sister [whom I love very much] gave me a nice yellow pouch so quite happily I used it as my pencil case. This went on for a year or so. Me using this bright yellow pouch rather proudly, everyday placing it on my desk at school. Until one day my friend came and told me "You do realise that pouch is for storing girl's underwear". I looked at the label on the pouch 'Triumph'. [Note: link is for mature adults only ok!?!?] Did I mention I love my sister very much?

Hope you all enjoyed that. Now you know why I am the way I am. Complicated and psycho? I think so. So I'm working hard and saving my pennies to get some therapy, anyone want to contribute?

[I'm going to break all the rules and not tag anyone. Feel free to share your best childhood moments on your blogs too.]

While in Seattle ...

I met 3 girls on the street and paid them for their services. They were very good at what they did and quite attractive too I have to say.

Now before you all jump on me and start questioning my moral values, the 3 girls I met were actually busking oustside a rather old Starbucks cafe just in front of the Pike's Place Market. [The Starbucks chain of coffee houses was actually founded here in Seattle.]

I was in Seattle for a few days of meetings and arrived on Friday night which meant I had the whole weekend to tour the city. Fantastic stuff!! So I visited the obligatory tourist spots, Pike's Place Market, the Space Needle, ChinaTown and Downtown. [I'll blog about these at a later date.]

Outside Starbuck's, originally uploaded by ~g~.

Anyway, back to the story about these girls. I was in Pike's Place Market and had walked around for a bit when I stepped outside of the covered area to try to walk around the crowds. That's when I saw a crowd gathering outside this cafe. As I walked closer, I heard the girls singing. So like the rest of the tourist folk, I stood around , took pictures [one of the few times you can take out your camera and start taking pictures of girls without anyone thinking you're sick in the head] and enjoyed the music of course.

Singing their heart out, originally uploaded by ~g~.

What music were they singing? How do I describe it? Not pop or rock, I guess just classical American tunes made popular in the 70s. These girls certainly could draw a crowd. Then in between songs, a lady asked them what they were raising money for. Unfortunately I couldn't hear what the reply was but I did hear that they are in highschool! That's when my jaw dropped. They certainly don't look like they're from highschool! Come to think of it, during my highschool days I was still watching Visionaries cartoons then. [In my defence, that cartoon was fantastic! Still is in my opinion!]

Highschool Trio, originally uploaded by ~g~.

I hung around for a little while, enjoying the tunes and the Seattle sunshine. Really really enjoyable. I thought to myself, "this place would be perfect for a laid back honeymoon". Finally I reached into my wallet and dropped a buck into the guitar case. I would have given more but that was the only small change I had at the time. As I started walking away, they started singing one of my favourite tunes ... "Going to the chapel and we're ... gonna get married ...... ". Yes, a perfect day indeed [if I can only find a chapel] : ).

[Ok all ... this will be the last post for a while ... going to go on-site where internet access will be very limited ... take care and keep warm ...]

"Home"

by Michael Buble

Another summer day
Has come and gone away
In Paris and Rome
But I wanna go home
Mmmmmmmm

Maybe surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel all alone
I just wanna go home
Oh I miss you, you know

And I've been keeping all the letters that I wrote to you
Each one a line or two
"I'm fine baby, how are you?"
Well I would send them but I know that it's just not enough
My words were cold and flat
And you deserve more than that

Another aerorplane
Another sunny place
I'm lucky I know
But I wanna go home
Mmmm, I've got to go home

Let me go home
I'm just too far from where you are
I wanna come home

And I feel just like I'm living someone else's life
It's like I just stepped outside
When everything was going right
And I know just why you could not
Come along with me
But this was not your dream
But you always believe in me

Another winter day has come
And gone away
And even Paris and Rome
And I wanna go home
Let me go home

And I'm surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel alone
Oh, let go home
Oh, I miss you, you know

Let me go home
I've had my run
Baby, I'm done
I gotta go home
Let me go home
It will all right
I'll be home tonight
I'm coming back home

[There, subtle enough? ... well, I won't be 'home tonight' ... about 3 more weeks to go ... ~sigh~ ]

Strange dream ...

I dreamt that there was going to be an exhibition of photographs in a gallery and they were photographs taken by me. I remember feeling all excited, which in itself is weird.

You see, I tend to get fully immersed in my dreams. What do I mean by that? I mean that when I dream, I tend to feel the emotions of what is happening. However my sister is able to somehow figure out that she is in a dream and logically convince herself that what she is dreaming shouldn't be happening. Weird.

As for the dream about photography, I'd recently taken up photography as a hobby. After having spent much money buying the gear, I'm looking forward to getting back home to 'play with my toys'. I don't intend on making this a career, just a hobby. From what I've read, to earn decent money as a photographer is really hard. So it surprises me that I'd actually have a dream about my photographs being displayed in a gallery.

Maybe after watching 'America's Next Top Model' marathon on the weekend wreaked havoc on my fragile mind. I think I sat through 5 or 6 hours of the show. Hey, I was trying to learn how the photographers work ok! : )

[BTW: The wedding picture below was my first wedding shoot. Made plenty of mistakes & the pics came out rather 'so so'. Oh well, live & learn.]

Milk lasts a very long time in the US ...

I currently live in an apartment in the US, complete with kitchen facilities. I prefer this rather than a hotel because I can cook and save myself some money (not to mention reduce my weight if I eat healthily enough).

Standard breakfast fare is cereal with milk. Quick and easy, just pour the cereal into a bowl followed by the milk. Cooking time = 0, perfect for dazed people who haven't yet recovered from their 8 hours of slumber.

So I bought some milk last week and today I checked the expiry date: 06 / 08 / 2007. So I thought "Wow ... milk in the US lasts up to 2 months, amazing!"

Wait a minute ... I then remembered that their date format is slightly different. While we go by [ day / month / year ], they go by [ month / day / year ]. So the milk will in fact expire in a few days time. Hahahaha ... have to keep in mind the different time formats. Luckily I didn't mix up the date for something more important eg date of a airplane flight.

First time in church after 6 weeks away ... what a weird day ...

Hi everyone, I'm here blogging at 4:30am on Monday morning. "Why?", you may ask? Jet-lag, having being on the US timezone for 6 weeks, I'll need a few days to get my body clock back in order. So last night, I fell asleep during 'Grey's Anatomy', a bummer I know but I saw a few episodes in the US that were a few episodes later than those shown here so I roughly know what's going to happen.

Ok, yesterday was my first day at church for a long time. It was great to see familiar faces again and also see some new faces around. Yesterday's service was a special one with a 'child dedication' at the end. Basically it is where the parents dedicate the lives of their children to God. That was the nice part, the weird parts were in the beginning and the end.

Before our pastor started preaching the message of the day he asked us to imagine being married [Wooohoooo!! I'm married], then to imagine that I have a child [Oh ... I have a child? Ok ...]. So there I was, trying to think of a wife and child. The only thing that popped into my head was an African American wife and a baby daughter. I've never thought of either two before and I've always wanted a boy! Worse still, the pastor asked for volunteers to share their thoughts and my dear friends yelled out my name. [Where is Roy when you need him?]. When pastor heard my name, he commented "Oh ... ~g~ will take a long time ...". Anyway, much to my dismay, I told everyone about my baby girl and African American wife. Now I wasn't trying to make fun of our African congregation or anything like that, it was just what was in my head at the time [and you know that nothing much goes on up there anyway. Just goes to show that I've been in the US too long].

Ok, that was the weird part in the morning. In the afternoon, after having a fantastic lunch [we ate at Good One BBQ, food was usual but after not having chinese food for 6 weeks, it was heavenly.] So a group of us was making our way to Baskin-Robbins, the a woman from our group starts tugging at my shirt and pulling them out of my pants at which time alarms bells began to ring in my head [you see, my t-shirt was tucked into my pants]. Here were the thoughts running in my head:

  • "What... is there a bug there somewhere?"
  • "Did something get tangled with your purse?"
  • "Hellooooo .., you're MARRIED! ... "
  • "Where were you BEFORE you got MARRIED?"
  • "When is your husband going to jump me and beat me to a pulp? I can picture it now ... me lying sprawled on the pavement along Albany Hwy with foam flowing out of my mouth ..."
After I had gained control of my clothing and asked her why she was tugging at my shirt, she explained that I had committed a fashion faux pas by tucking my shirt into my pants. [In my defense, I had worn a jacket in the morning and since the day had gotten warmer, I had left it in my car]. My mum and sis used to tell me what to wear, I think they've given up by now. They still do comment on each other's attire, all they end up achieving is prolonging the time it takes for them to dress up.

So all this 'tugging at my shirt' business made me think. What else do married women have control over their husbands? After having observed the couples I've known, the following rings true:

  • Finances - she controls it. Somehow somewhere, when the men signed the marriage certificate, there was some fine print in invisible ink that states she now decides what the man can spend. So that means ... no more gadgets / electronics, toy radio controlled cars ... generally all the fun toys that ALL MEN SHOULD HAVE.
  • Food - she controls it. Not only will she tell you what to eat, she will eat your food, give you her left overs or even switch your food with hers when she doesn't like her food! Oh ... not to mention the first point above, you end up paying for it.
  • The way you dress - she controls it. You may not be aware but husbands have some weird psychological effects on their wives. If you happen to wear something that she doesn't like, her mood changes, something like instant PMS. She now HATES you and that will go on until you wear WHAT SHE WANTS YOU TO WEAR.
  • Your time - she controls it. "What to play tennis after church?" The usual answer is "ask my wife". Need I say more?

Now, I'm not trying to portray wives as being evil [not evil ... I wouldn't go that far ... maybe slightly sadistic in a good way?], they're just a few quirks I've seen in some married couples that I just find strange. Sometimes I just want to drag the men aside and ask "how did it get to this?" and be ready with some tissues if the tears start to flow and they need a shoulder to cry on. Married men, I'm here for you. [You know what, even after this post, I think I'll eventually end up as one of those men I described above. Be assured though, I'll go down kicking and screaming!!! BTW. Sorry for the long post, I haven't blogged for a while and I now have 'blogging diarrhoea'. Lots of crap being disseminated.]

Missing in action for a while ...

Hi all, just letting you know that this will probably be my last post for a while. You see, my office is sending me to the US for 5 weeks to work. I'll be in a town called Lafayette in Louisiana. I've been a few times previously and it is a small town with nothing much to do so I'm somewhat dreading the whole experience. Not sure what sort of internet access I'll be able to get hold of but I'll try to keep in touch!

What will I miss when I'm over there [in no particular order]?

  • My bed
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Cell group!!!
  • Friend's wedding
  • Impact World Tour
  • Chinese food
  • Comfort of home
  • Broadband internet
  • Church

I'll be flying out Sunday morning and returning in mid-April so have fun everybody and I'll see you when I get back.

Are you fertile?

I read in the paper where a group [I can't remember who anymore] performed a rather interesting study. They recorded the fertility cycle of a group of women and got them to take pictures of themselves everyday. At the end of this experiment, they examined the data and found that the women tended to 'dress up' more when they're at their most fertile stage of their cycle.

If this was true, then we can make the following conclusions:

Jennifer Hawkins [Miss Universe 2004] - since she always looks beautiful, she must be very fertile all the time.
JH

~g~ [Mr Himbo 2006-2007] - infertile.
GBaby
