Cupcakes ... Inspired ...

Inspired my Memoir's post, my mum set about reproducing the "best ever made in my baking history ....chhiiiaaannnngggg" muffin. If you've known Mrs Memoir for a while, you would know that she has cooked & baked many great dishes in her time. For her to claim that this is the best she has ever cooked is like saying David Beckham kicked his best banana curling goal winning kick ever. All this means is ... must try.

The whole process was surprisingly quick. All up, it took about 1 hour from start to the muffins coming out of the oven.

All in all, it was a good recipe. Moist and tasty. A couple of things that prevented this from being "chiang", not a fault of the recipe but our implementation. Instead of blueberries, we had used mixed berries ... finding out that we didn't really like the sour taste of these berries didn't help. I don't think all the ingredients were evenly mixed, mine didn't have any white chocolate in it which meant it wasn't sweet enough for my liking. Further proof that all ovens are different, ours were cooked in 20 minutes on 170 degrees C (fan forced).

While the recipe was good ... I reckon Mr. Memoir wasn't talking about the muffins when he said "chiang" to Mrs. Memoir.

Food galore ...

If you're ever wanting a satisfying dinner that doesn't cost a bomb [who doesn't], pop over to Hawker's Cuisine located at Unit 17/ 66 Roe St Northbridge, phone number is 9328 9668. We were expecting a quiet night since it was midweek [dinner was actually on Wednesday] but was surprised to see the restaurant packed with diners. Located on the same shop lot at City Garden and Billly Lee's, a packed restaurant is a good indication that their food is pretty good.

Had dinner there tonight with my family and we ordered the dishes below. We also had a sambal Kang Kung which I forgot to photograph. All in all it cost us $125 which is pretty reasonable I reckon. Click on the pics and you'll be taken to my flickr site which contains a short description of each dish.

Pizza for dinner ...

BBQ Chicken Pizza

Dinner for Fridays are usually 'quick and easy' in my household and I suggested pizza for tonight. While Little Caesars may make the best pizza in Perth [maybe best in Australia, heck even the world???], a 40+ minute drive down to Mundaring wasn't an option. I reckon a close second would be Applecross Pizza located in Applecross which essentially is a franchise of Broadway Pizza located in Nedlands. They're usually pretty generous with their ingredients and their pizzas are delicious, I highly recommend the BBQ Chicken Pizza.

What about Pizza Hut, Dominoes or Eagle Boys you may ask? Well, it is kinda like first discovering comfortable undies, once you've experienced the better ones, you never want to go back. Are there any good food places you know about? Please do share!

What fish was that?

[The conversation below actually occurred last Sunday evening ... for real.]

A little background first. My younger brother is wanting to host a small dinner at a chinese restaurant & a friend of his knew the chef. So they went to have a chat with the chef to decide on the menu. Later that evening, my brother brought back a list of the dishes he's thinking of ordering.

Mum: Cold platter ...
Mum: Spinach & crab meat soup ... [haven't heard of this one before]
Mum: ass ... assh*le fish ...
Me: ????? ...
Me: What did you say? [Curiosity got the better of me & I took the list to have a closer look]

On the list was S/S whole fish, try saying it out loud ... see what I mean? The 'S/S' means 'sweet & sour' ... so for a second there I thought we were going to eat something really weird ...

Forget the sharkfin soup!!! We have 'S whole' fish!!!

Side note: The time difference between the east coast & Perth can be a good thing too. Found out who won Aussie idol without having to watch all the show ... hahahaha ...

Craving for some Japanese?

Paid a visit to Matsuri a few weeks ago. Don't know why but I was craving for some raw fish. Service was quick & efficient as usual & was quite surprised at the number of people considering it was Monday night. One thing great about this place is the good quality food which is quite reasonably priced. Was looking for a waitress named 'Mai' whom a 'brudder' of ours tried to 'chat up' after having some 'sake'. "I was trying to get to know her so I could invite her to church!", he said. Hahaha ... yes ... hhmmmmm ... alas, didn't see her then. It has been a while, maybe she has moved on. Wonder what she's doing now ...

Eating food

I have evolved. No I haven't grown an extra limb, just tried a new way of eating. ["What new way of eating? You can only eat one way right?? Through your mouth???"] Yah yah .. what I mean is, I have evolved from eating to fill my stomach to eating to enjoy food.

I used to eat just to silence the "hungry moster " [you can probably tell from my gut, not from beer by the way 'cos I can't drink] Tonight, I ate with the intent of tasting food. Trying to savour the texture, flavour etc. Did this at "Fuji Sushi Station" in Victoria Park.

Entree was 'Yukke', totally raw beef with raw egg yolk and pine nuts. This was certainly an experience, the beef was soft with a hint of sesame oil. My main meal was the sashimi. The sashimi consisted of salmon, tuna, octopus and mackerel. I love my wasabi, I made a paste out of 1 part soy sauce and about 4 parts wasabi. I coated a piece of tuna on one side and put the whole piece in my mouth. The sensation of the wasabi making it's way into my head made both my eyes tear [tears actually ran down my face. I didn't cry because of the spicy flavour, it is just to do with the way wasabi affects your sinuses. Just like crying when cutting an onion.]

When I chewed the raw fish, I would move the meat through every part of my tongue [since different taste receptors are located in different spots. I heard the front part of your tongue contain the sweet receptors.] Tried to tell the difference between the various raw fishes, liked salmon the best.

The food was great as always, I wasn't full but I was satisfied. A good meal indeed.
