Change of heart ...
Whenever a topic about wedding rings or diamonds in particular come up during conversation, I almost always joke about getting the cheapest or even a fake diamond, ranting that a small diamond just doesn't justify the amount of money paid. So there'll be suggestions such as getting a cubic zirconian diamond or a cultured diamond from Shhh Secrets. Heck ... I even had the gall to suggest getting a ring from Cash Converters! However during cell, we were studying a certain passage and I noticed the following:
1 Samuel 18:20-27
In the meantime, Saul's daughter Michal had fallen in love with David, and Saul was delighted when he heard about it. "Here's another chance to see him killed by the Philistines!" Saul said to himself. But to David he said, "I have a way for you to become my son-in-law after all!" Then Saul told his men to say confidentially to David, "The king really likes you, and so do we. Why don't you accept the king's offer and become his son-in-law?" When Saul's men said these things to David, he replied, "How can a poor man from a humble family afford the bride price for the daughter of a king?" When Saul's men reported this back to the king, he told them, "Tell David that all I want for the bride price is one hundred Philistine foreskins! Vengeance on my enemies is all I really want." But what Saul had in mind was that David would be killed in the fight. David was delighted to accept the offer. So before the time limit expired, he and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines and presented all their foreskins to the king. So Saul gave Michal to David to be his wife.

Imagine having to kill two hundred people, let alone having to handle their private parts after and uh ... cut off certain bits!
Soooo ... spending a couple of thousand dollars to buy a diamond ring doesn't sound so bad after all ...

When/if you're in the market for diamonds, please don't. Read my plea. (You actually commented on it then, so I assume you read it then too.) Like you said, it just doesn't justify the amount of money paid. Worst still it doesn't justify the blood shed and the lives exploited for it.
But it is an interesting idea, the comparison foreskins vs diamond. ew.
Hi Marianne, I did read your post about blood diamonds ... alas I'm unsure if many other women share your view on the subject. Popular culture have made diamonds a must have item for marriage 'or else!' ... I shudder to think of the consequences when the well meaning man declares to his fiancee that the diamond is fake / cultured. During my jokes about getting smaller or fake diamonds, if looks could kill, I'd be dead many times over. :)
~g~: The cultured ones looks like the real deal. Actually it is the real deal, just that the process is sped up many times, so there is plenty to go around. No need for blood shed, and makes the girl happy. If you don't tell, i'm sure no one would notice the difference.
I think that's why I'm in teaching. I 'm always thinking how people should be educated about issues... Think of the impression you'd make. You'd not only sweep her off her feet (at a much reduced cost) and you'd convince her you were a knight in shinning amour, champion of social justice issues!
Well, I shudder to think of the consequences if a well-meaning man who proposes to me does it with a real diamond.
haha, I'm not sure if the not telling is such a great idea though Joey! If she ever find out, there'll be hell to pay!
Hey Marianne, getting educated is always a good thing so maybe when the time comes, I'll give it a shot ... or get shot ... whichever comes first. : )
Hi Joey! You didn't just suggest that husbands-to-be buy their wives-to-be a simulated diamond and lie about it did you? Ooooooo ... dangerous way to start a marriage ;P ... hahaha ... I know you didn't mean it that way, just kidding ...
~g~ : HAhaha, dunno ler, leave that hard work + thinking to the guys. Actually most girls are not that diamond crazy, what is important is to show her that she is precious. If all fails just rent. "Blood Diamond" dvd and watch it together, and then tell her that is the reason you are buying a cultured diamond.
Ok, enough about diamonds, they are boring, bring on the sapphires and emeralds!!!
